Amalfi became in 839 AD the first Italian maritime republic and it is now the largest town in the region.
Among many other monuments, in the center of Amalfi, approached via an imposing stairway, the town’s most noted asset is the Cathedral of Sant’ Andrea dating back to the IX century, with its stunning façade and bronze doors.
The Cloister of Paradise, built in the 13th century to house the tombs of the town's most illustrious citizens. Interesting is the structure of entwined arches resting on 120 marble columns and the play of light created by sun-rays amongst the arabesque of arches.
The Paper Museum, situated in the Valle dei Mullini in an old 13th century paper mill, and then Piazza Flavio Gioia by the harbor is a vibrant area with several bars and restaurants.
On the hills above Amalfi lies the delightful town of Ravello, where the beauty of the landscape harmonies with the charm of the architectural monuments, the 11th Century Cathedral, the enchanting “Villa Cimbrone” and “Villa Rufolo” which inspired Wagner and his “Parsifal” and where in summer season a series of musical concerts are organized in his honor.
