Amalfi became in 839 AD the first Italian maritime republic and it is now the largest town in the region. Among many other monuments, in the centre of Amalfi, approached via an imposing stairway, the town’s most noted asset is the Cathedral of Sant’ Andrea dating back to the IX century, with its stunning façade and bronze doors.
The Cloister of Paradise, built in the 13th century to house the tombs of the town's most illustrious citizens. Interesting is the structure of entwined arches resting on 120 marble columns and the play of light created by sun-rays amongst the arabesque of arches. The Paper Museum, situated in the Valle dei Mullini in an old 13th century paper mill, and then Piazza Flavio Gioia by the harbour is a vibrant area with several bars and restaurants.
On the hills above Amalfi lies the delightful town of Ravello, where the beauty of the landscape harmonies with the charm of the architectural monuments, the 11th Century Cathedral, the enchanting “Villa Cimbrone” and “Villa Rufolo” which inspired Wagner and his “Parsifal” and where in summer season a series of musical concerts are organised in his honour.
The Amalfi Coast lies on the southern side of the Sorrentine Peninsula. It is one of the most popular seaside destinations in Italy's Campania region and, with its breathtakingly panoramic Amalfi Drive is considered one of the most beautiful stretches of coast in the whole of Europe.
Positano - Historic retreat of the ancient Greeks and the Roman nobility is a hugely popular beauty spot, noted for its lovely Moorish architecture and unbelievable site. Its enchanting town center of delightful pastel-hued houses surrounds the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta, its laneways are lined with quaint, colorful shops and its numerous beaches are world famous.
Sorrento is a gracious town, rich in local tradition, history and natural beauty. It was already a favourite destination of the ancient Greeks and Romans and the signs are still visible today in the “Antiche Mura”, the remains of the old Greek city walls. on which the Romans built their own walls and fortifications and which were used during medieval times. The centre of Sorrento offers many buildings of historical interest such as the “Basilica di S. Antonino” which dates back to the IX century, the cloister of S. Francesco which was built at the beginning of the 19th century and the SEDIL DOMINOVA, the only testament in Campania to the ancient noble seats.
Capri, an island rich in natural and architectural beauty which has been the home for Roman Emperors, Italian Dukes and now a favourite haunt of movie stars and jet setters attracted by the luxurious hotels and houses on the hillside. The Island’s many attractions include the Blue Grotto, a 54m long sea-cave that is bathed in an ethereal blue light, the impressive remains of Emperor Tiberius’ Palace and the Medieval Monastery of Certosa di San Giacomo, the beautiful Villa San Michele of Dr Axel Munthe – famous Swedish writer – and the Gardens of Augustus from where one can enjoy a breathtaking view of the ‘faraglioni’ and the Marina Piccola. Not to be missed is the coffee break in the ‘piazzetta’ or the shopping in the via Camerelle!
Now a world renowned archaeological site, Pompei and Ercolano were buried following the eruption from Mount Vesuvius in 79AD. The excavations began in the 18th century and gradually led to the discovery of fabulous villas with their beautiful frescoes still intact, an amphitheatre, baths and so many other buildings which are a testament to the prosperity of this once thriving metropolis.
Paestum, which was founded by the Greeks from Sybaris, some time around the 6th century B.C. and was later colonized by the Romans,. with its imposing Greek temples, is one of the Italy's most famous archaeological sites. The sight of the magnificently conserved golden temples dedicated to Neptune, Basilica and Cerere, is an unforgettable one.
The city of Naples has a rich and varied history. Its many monuments reveal the splendor of its past.
